The Cross Cultural and Gender Center exists to contribute significantly to the continued development of a safe and welcoming environment for the Fresno State community. We foster meaningful dialogue and activism that works to eliminate racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other forms of oppression.
LFSA was organized in 2009 as a way to bring a strong voice to issues affecting the Latina/o community at Fresno State.
We are committed to:
- Promoting Latina/o student issues such as retention and graduation.
- Advocating for increasing the number of Latinas/o staff and faculty to better match the demographic makeup of Fresno State students.
- Developing a social and professional network of Latina/o staff and faculty at Fresno State to better inform ourselves on topics and issues relevant to our community.
Any Fresno State professor, department, or organization may request a presentation on popular Latino/a/x topics. They may also request a panel where they may hear about the lived experiences of first-generation Latino/a/x students (including a Q&A). Click here to check-out what we have available!
Established in 1977, the Chicano Alumni Club is a founding member of the FSAA chapters and clubs. The club’s leadership consists of twelve volunteers who advocate for higher education, represent and participate in community events, and network with other groups and individuals that help establish partnerships opportunities.
The Chicano/Latino Commencement Celebration is an awesome academic and cultural experience for our students. A key element to the success of this event is the dedicated group of volunteer staff and faculty that help the event run smoothly. Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS) (Womxn Active in Scholarship and Social Justice) is a professional organizations for self-identified Chicana, Latina, Native American/Indigena Mujeres and gender non-conforming academics, students, and activists.

White Immunity: Working Through the Pedagogical Pitfalls of Privilege
“How can poor white people be privileged?” How many times have you been in a discussion on white privilege and encountered a question like that? In this engaging and thought-provoking SpeakOut webinar, scholar and author Nolan Cabrera, PhD, offers a new way to address this question with the concept of “White Immunity” – the social inoculation that white people experience as a result of being white in a systemically-racist society.
Cabrera links the history of racial oppression and whiteness to contemporary times and helps work through some of the pitfalls of “privilege.” Based on 15 years of research for his award-winning book, White Guys on Campus: Racism, White Immunity, and the Myth of “Post-Racial” Higher Education, Cabrera explores how white immunity informs racial conflicts ranging from cultural appropriation, racism on college campuses, white men using the n-word, and the re-open “protesters.”
Ultimately, he calls for radical empathy and racial responsibility for white people that stems from their white immunity.

Latino Males In Higher Education Webinar
Excelencia in Education, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin, presented a webinar that convened leaders to discuss not only what they know, but what can be done to accelerate the success of Latino males in higher education.
While college enrollment among Latino males continues to increase, they still lag behind Latino females in college enrollment — a disparity that increases as the level of higher education increases. Since Latino males represent more than half of traditional college-aged Americans, their college success will be vital to America’s future. This webinar brought together some of the strongest thought leaders in this area to discuss not only what we know but what we can do to accelerate college enrollment and completion among Latino males.
