Services for Students with Disabilities
Read&Write
The office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) offers the literacy software called Read&Write by TextHelp to all Fresno State students, faculty, and staff for free by using the Fresno State email and password. Read&Write is a software that specializes in Reading, Writing and Research to assist students with the demands of higher education. The software is available on PC, Mac, and Chromebook/Browser.
Reading Tools:
- Have content read out loud!
- Ability to read accessible and non-accessible content. Includes PDFs, Word DOCXs, and web content.
- Customize reading output such as customizing voices, languages, reading speeds, and how the software can pronounce words.
- Custom dictionary to look up unfamiliar words and view images of the meaning of the word.
Writing Tools:
- Custom spelling, grammer, and punctuation checker.
- Use dictation software to speak the content out loud and have the software write it down.
- Create voice notes
Research:
- Custom Highlighting to outline content on PDFs, Word DOCXs, and web content.
- Create custom notes and vocabulary based on highlighted content buy collecting highlights
Other:
- Custom tools to create MP3 files of content to be played on any compatible device.
- Translation feature to convert written text to another language as well as have it read out loud with the appropriate accents.
- Customize the screen viewing area by adjusting brightness or visual cues to easily track the mouse cursor.
PC and Mac users:
- Visit the Read&Write website.
- Click on "Try Read&Write Today".
- Select what platform (PC or Mac) to download R&W.
- Install Read&Write Software.
- Sign-in to Read&Write.
- Select “Sign in with Google” with the Fresno State email and password.
Chromebook users:
- Create a new Chromebook user with the Fresno State email.
- Sign into the Chromebook as the new user.
- Visit the Read&Write website.
- Click on "Try Read&Write Today".
- Select Chrome and download R&W.
- Install Read&Write Software.
- Sign-in to Read&Write.
- Select “Sign in with Google” with the Fresno State email and password.

SSD is responsible for the following areas regarding Read&Write:
- Providing training to students registered with the SSD office on how to best use the software to access instructional materials and testing materials.
- Providing access to the software in the SSD Computer Lab and Testing rooms to ensure accessibility in those areas.
The campus is responsible for the following areas regarding Read&Write:
- The Fresno State campus is responsible for procuring TextHelp’s Read&Write software for all students, faculty and staff for campus and home usage contingent on an active Fresno State username and password.
- Fresno State has also committed to ensuring that all campus computers that students have access to will have the Read&Write software installed.
