Office of the University Registrar

Priority Registration

The purpose of this policy is to define the registration order and process at Fresno State.  Priority 1 and 2 Group registration applications will remain the purview of the AVP of Enrollment Management with the advisory of the Strategic Enrollment Management Committee (SEMC).

The SEMC has been working on a registration policy for Fresno State since we are one of few campuses that does not currently have one.  This policy has already been reviewed by AP&P and was submitted to the Academic Senate on 3/12/2023.  Due to the length of time it may take for the policy to be formally approved, SEMC has been approved to pilot the changes effective with spring 2024 registration.  This will allow for more transparency with our priority 1 and 2 registration groups, create an actual process for groups to apply, and make any adjustments necessary before the policy is officially approved.

Please note: Priority registration is only available to continuing students. New/incoming students will register for classes on their selected Dog Days New Student Orientation date.

  1. Priority 1 Group NEW Definition and Expectations: Priority 1 Registration groups will register on the first day of registration week for each approved term.  Priority is defined in two ways:
    1. Federally mandated groups that require priority registration by law and cannot limit the number of students participating in their program.
    2. Campus priority groups are determined by the SEMC based on the groups’ need for specific student schedules, how they support the university-wide mission, and if they are able to limit the number of participating students.
Note: All priority groups must continue to update students within their designated groups each term by the deadline designed by the Office of the University Registrar, even if there is no headcount limit.
  2. Priority 2 Group NEW Definition and Expectations:
    1. Priority 2 Registration groups are determined by the SEMC.  These groups may be defined as campus groups that do not require special schedules in order for students to participate in campus activities or programs and can limit the number of participating students.  Participating campus groups and student headcount limitations will be determined by the SEMC during the application review process.
Note: All early groups are required to update students within their designated groups and headcount limits each term by the deadline designed by the Office of the University Registrar.
