In 1970, following a period of political unrest and student activism, Professor Izumi Taniguchi established the Asian American Studies program at Fresno State, influenced by two of his students. Later that year, a student named Bill Tsuji joined the program and collaborated with others to create the Amerasia Organization, aimed at promoting cultural diversity and awareness among Asian American students. Today, Amerasia is a vibrant multi-cultural organization that continues to champion cultural diversity and supports higher education, with plans to fund a scholarship for students pursuing further studies. Additionally, Amerasia fosters community understanding through its annual Amerasia Week, which showcases the diverse Asian cultures in the Central Valley.
The Asian Social Work Organization (ASWO) is a club at Fresno State that welcomes both social work majors and students from other disciplines who are interested in social work. Established in 1989, the group focuses on networking and engaging members in academic and community-related social work activities. ASWO also serves as a supportive community where members can access educational resources and build connections with others who share similar interests.
Hmong American literature is gaining momentum, with trailblazing writers emerging over the past decade to amplify Hmong voices in the literary realm. Groups like the Hmong American Writers' Circle (HAWC) inspire new talent, and Hmong American Ink & Stories (HAIS) builds on this by providing a supportive space for Hmong writers and other marginalized voices, especially from the Asian Pacific community. HAIS not only encourages its members to document their own stories but also fosters a collaborative environment for sharing, critiquing, and growing together, with the ultimate goal of publishing a literary journal by year's end that includes contributions from Fresno State students and the broader Central Valley community.
The Hmong Student Association (HmSA) aims to uphold high educational, moral, and ethical standards while fostering leadership, self-confidence, and friendships among its members. The group helps Hmong students adapt to university life and collaborates with other campus organizations to strengthen the community. Through cultural events and educational workshops, HmSA promotes understanding of Hmong culture on campus and engages in community outreach and volunteer activities.
The Lao Student Association was founded in 1988 at California State University, Fresno, to create a space where students could deepen their understanding of Lao culture through various cultural events and activities. The association encourages social networking and academic excellence while fostering connections among students interested in Lao heritage. Though focused on promoting Lao culture, the organization welcomes all Fresno State students to participate and learn.
The Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) aims to advance Asian heritage scientists and engineers in their educational and professional journeys, helping them reach their full career potential. Beyond fostering professional growth, SASE promotes a sense of community and encourages members to give back through local community engagement. The organization is dedicated to empowering its members while contributing to the well-being of the communities they call home.
