Student FAQs

I received an email and letter that says I have to meet with Academic Success Coaching (ASC). How do I sign up and do I need to attend?

All freshmen on probation are required to meet with Academic Success Coaching 3 times in the semester.  To schedule a meeting students can do so at the link provided in the email that was sent or by contacting ASC at asc@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Why do I need to meet with ASC if I am a freshman on probation?

Students who are connected with an Academic Coach obtain at least a letter grade difference in their GPA and have a 77% chance of returning the following semester.  While we understand that this can be an additional responsibility, we highly encourage you to meet with ASC at least three times in the semester.  Your academic coach can be a source of motivation for you and help to provide effective study strategies and resources for your classes.

I am unable to add or make changes to my schedule.  Is it the ASC probation hold that is preventing me from making changes to my schedule?

The ASC probation hold does not affect your current course schedule.  If you are having difficulties with making schedule changes, please contact the Registrar office or your major advisor.

When will my probation hold get lifted?

Your probation hold will be lifted after completing your 3 sessions with Academic Success Coaching.  It is recommended that you meet with your Academic Coach at least once a month.

What if I need to meet with an Academic Coach during the week of registration to lift my hold?

There will be one day of drop-in for students to connect with an Academic Coach on Wednesday, November 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.  Students can access drop-in both in person and through Zoom.

Can I still meet with an Academic Coach after my 3rd meeting?

Yes, students are encouraged to reach out and/or continue working with Academic Success Coaching even after completing all three sessions.

How will I know if I have been referred to Academic Success Coaching?

You will receive an email from Academic Success Coaching (ASC) letting you know that you have been referred and will also receive a phone call from Academic Success Coaching staff asking you to set up an appointment with an Academic Coach.

Note: If an instructor has not referred you to the program, but you think you could benefit from meeting with an Academic Coach, you can contact us at 559.278.3052 or email asc@mail.fresnostate.edu to set up an appointment.

What can I expect in my academic coaching session?

Coaching sessions are unique to questions or concerns you may have and are aimed to provide you with study strategies and resources to support you through your classes.  A session can take anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes.

Who will know about my referral?

Maintaining confidentiality is important to Academic Success Coaching.  Only your professor, Academic Success Coaching staff, special program advisor and any campus resources you have been referred to will know of your referral.  In addition, we follow the guidelines set forth by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, 34 CFR Part 99 (www.ed.gov).

Will my instructor or staff member who referred me know if I have met with an Academic Coach?

Academic Success Coaching will not discuss what you spoke about in your sessions; however, your instructor will be notified if you followed up on the referral.
