How do I join ASI?

Every currently enrolled student who pays the student body fee at Fresno State is automatically included in the membership of Associated Students, Inc. (View ASI org chart). Member status gives fee-paying students the right to cast votes in the election, run for an elected position, and serve on campus committees. 

Each academic year ASI receives numerous submissions to become part of Fresno State’s ASI team. We have provided helpful information for you to consider before you file for office. Please read carefully and we wish you luck on your prospective campaign.

There is a strict deadline for submissions so please submit the required documents to asi-electionscommissioner@mail.fresnostate.edu and ASI Director of Operations, James Martinez at jdmartinez@csufresno.edu with all required forms attached to your submission. The deadline to submit is February 16, 2024. We wish you the best of luck on your respective campaigns and hope to meet you soon.

 

Candidate information

Below you will find information pertaining to the filing and running as a candidate for ASI student body elections. Please read carefully to learn more about the positions, opportunities, and documents you will need to submit for ASI elections.

The ASI election process is outlined by ASI’s Election Code. ASI elections provide the Fresno State student body an opportunity to choose 22 student representatives who will serve a (1) year term of office (June 1- May 31) and will represent students providing them with a voice and vehicle to create actionable and meaningful change through the democratic process on the Fresno State campus. Below you will find current elected positions within ASI:

Elections occur annually and online each spring semester. Election results determine the ASI Senate, the offices of President, Vice President of Finance and Vice President of External Affairs. In order to serve in one of these elected positions you must meet eligibility requirements in accordance with California State University, Fresno, and the CSU Chancellor’s Office, submit required documents, as well as follow election protocols and procedures, and ultimately win your race.

Students are eligible to run for office if they meet the CSU system-wide requirements.

Grades – All candidates must be enrolled and in good standing with the university. Candidates must have received at least a 2.0 term grade point average (GPA) in fall 2023. Graduate students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA for the fall 2023 term in all graduate work. Candidates on academic probation will be unable to petition.

Unit Load – Undergraduate candidates must maintain 6 units per semester while running for office. Graduate and credential students must maintain 3 units per semester while running for office. Undergraduate students are allowed to earn a maximum of 150 semester units or 125 percent of the units required for a specific baccalaureate degree objective, whichever is greater. Graduate and credential students are allowed to earn a maximum of 50 semester units or 167 percent of the units required for a graduate or credential objective, whichever is greater.

Residency – Undergraduate candidates for office must have been enrolled on the campus and have completed at least one semester prior to the election, earning a total of 6 semester units during that year. Graduate and credential student candidates for office must earn 6 units per semester of continuous attendance as a new graduate or credential student to be eligible. Graduate and credential students who received a bachelor’s degree or credential within the past three years from the same campus must have earned a total of 12 semester units during their last year as an undergraduate to be eligible.

Instructions to run for office.

5 Steps to running for office

  1. Submit: Submit completed Petition for Office Petitions are available online at asi.fresnostate.edu/elections, or for pick up in RSU303/304. Completed forms must be submitted to ASI no later than Friday, February 17, by 5 p.m. Submissions are accepted in person or through email submission.
  2. Read: Read the Election Code. All candidates are required to have a copy of the Election Code and can ask any questions regarding the code at the All-Candidates Meeting.
  3. Attend: Attend the "All-candidates Meeting" All candidates must attend a mandatory orientation on ASI Elections, Monday, February 27, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in RSU room 214. A date and time for individual portraits will be sent via email. Professional attire is required for the portraits.
  4. Campaign: Campaign. Candidates can begin campaigning immediately following the All Candidates meeting on Monday, February 27, Please be sure to follow the Election Code.
  5. Vote!: Vote! Elections begin Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 9 a.m. and end Thursday, March 23, 2023, at noon.

Executive Positions

There are four (4) executive positions that make up the ASI executive team: the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Finance, and Vice President of External Affairs. Each is responsible for and performs various tasks that are necessary for ASI operations and activities. Below you will find brief descriptions of each position and their corresponding duties, responsibilities and expectations.

President – The President of Associated Students, Inc., has the duty and responsibility of serving as chief executive officer of the organization and overseeing the corporations’ activities and affairs. The president acts as the primary representative of the organization within the campus community and at the state, local, and sometimes national level on all matters related to ASI. The president is also responsible for working in collaboration with the ASI director of operations and staff to forward the mission of ASI, ensure ASI follows ASI Bylaws, Policies, university rules and regulations, provide services to students, and represents the student voice within the campus community and beyond.

Executive Vice President – The Executive Vice President serves as the chair for the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Student Senate and is responsible for administering general operations and procedures pertaining to the ASI Senate and Committees. The EVP is selected from one of eleven (11) at-large senators who may vote only when necessary to break a tie-vote. In the event the ASI President is unable to perform their duties, the executive vice president will act as interim president and have all powers of and subject to all restrictions of the office of ASI president.

Vice President of Finance – The Vice President of Finance serves as ASI’s chief financial officer and prepares the organization’s annual budget, facilitates the distribution of club grants, assists in managing club and campus organization financial accounts, while advising the ASI president, student senate, and staff of the organization’s financial affairs. The vice president of finance is the primary signatory on all financial documents, and serves as the chair of the ASI Finance Committee and is a voting member of the ASI executive committee. The vice president of finance is also responsible for ensuring all ASI fiscal Bylaws, Policies, university guidelines are followed.

President of External Affairs -The Executive Vice President serves as the chair for the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Student Senate and is responsible for administering general operations and procedures pertaining to the ASI Senate and Committees. College Senators

There are eight (8) colleges within the campus community, and is represented by a senator elected from students within each respective college.

Colleges represented in the ASI Senate include: the colleges of Arts & Humanities, Health & Human Services, Science & Mathematics and Social Sciences, as well as the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Craig School of Business, Lyles College of Engineering and the Kremen School of Education & Human Development.

There are nineteen (19) senators until an executive vice president is selected from among the at-large senators at which point the number of senators is reduced to eighteen (18).

At-Large positions, more commonly referenced by the “area of responsibility” chosen by the senators after being elected (Athletic and Recreational Affairs; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Greek Affairs; Health and Wellness; Operations and Resident Affairs; Student Affairs and Engagement; Sustainability; Veteran and Transfer Affairs; Undergraduate and Graduate Affairs; University Innovation). Senators make up the voting board for the organization and are appointed by the executive vice president during the first meeting of the ASI senate.

Please read the attached documents below before applying to run for office in the 2023 student body election. They provide a general overview of ASI expectations, policies and additional information about becoming part of the ASI team.

ASI Election Packet

To run for any ASI office, a petition is required, which can be obtained online by going to the ASI website under the Elections tab, or can be picked up at the ASI offices located in the Resnick Student Union (RSU) on the third floor in rooms 303 & 304. Petitions for office will be available on Monday, January 22, 2024 and will be due no later than Friday, February 16, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. If you submit your petition after the deadline, you will be disqualified to run for office in the 2024 ASI student body election.

It is important you read all information provided in your petition as it contains timelines, important dates and deadlines, and requires signatures in order to qualify for office. College senators need to obtain 25 valid signatures from students within their respective colleges, while executive positions are required to submit 50 valid signatures, which can be obtained from the entire student body. You will also be required to submit a personal statement within your petition which will be used on the ballot distributed to students during the election.

Voter information

Each student will be notified and receive an email to their student email on March 18, 2024 encouraging them to vote in the 2024 student body election. On March 19, 2024, each student will receive an email with their unique username and password to access their electronic ballot.

Election booths will also be hosted on campus for the students at the RSU and Library. Stop by ASI’s voting booths during the election to cast your vote, or vote online via the link sent to your student email account.

Each student will be notified and receive an email to their student email account on March 19, 2024 with a link, username and password to cast an electronic vote for the 2024 ASI Student Body Election. Use this link to go to the voter portal. A physical voting location will be available in the Library during ASI’s operating hours. Voting will still require the student to log into their email to access the link provided to them.

2023-2024 ASI Election results 

(Fresno, CA) – Results for the 2022-2023 ASI Elections were tallied March 23rd, 2023 by representatives from the League of Women Voters. There were a total of 1,309 votes cast with 5.7% of eligible students voting.
