Student Health and Counseling Center
Nutrition Services
A Registered Dietitian is available to provide FREE individual nutrition counseling sessions.
- General healthy eating tips
- Review of your current eating habits
- Weight management and dietary assessment
- Chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes
- Personal goal setting
Your first dietitian visit is a collaborative, judgment-free consultation focused on understanding your lifestyle, medical history, and personal goals. A registered dietitian nutritionist (RD or RDN) will ask questions about your diet and daily habits to build a personalized, evidence-based, sustainable eating plan.
The initial assessment typically lasts up to 60 minutes and can include:
- Review of Medical History: Reviewing past or current health conditions, family history, recent lab work, and your medications or supplements. Weight and body fat can be measured and assessed, but this is always optional.
- Lifestyle & Eating Habits: Discussing your typical daily schedule, stress levels, sleep patterns, exercise, and food budget.
- Goal Setting: Working together to establish realistic, achievable, and personalized nutrition goals.
- Answering your nutrition questions.
What Happens After Your Nutrition Appointment
Although not required, a follow-up appointment may be scheduled if you would like. This appointment usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes and is used to track your progress, navigate challenges, and adjust as needed. Depending on your health needs, referrals to other Student Health and Counseling Center Services can also be made.
How to Prepare
To get the most out of your session, try to gather the following items beforehand:
- A brief food journal or log of what you ate over the last 3 days. This is optional, but helpful.
- Names and dosages of any medications, vitamins, minerals, or supplements you take.
- If you have had lab tests or medical care at another facility, you may bring those to your visit. The dietitian will have access to your medical records at the Student Health and Counseling Center.
- A list of your nutrition or health goals, and any nutrition questions you may have.
If you need the following, you will likely need to consult another health care professional.
- If you need a prescription medication or lab tests, make an appointment with a doctor or nurse practitioner.
- If you are experiencing health concerns, including digestive symptoms, be sure to consult a doctor for evaluation and diagnosis before scheduling a nutrition appointment.
