Information on Formal Assessment

Students who are concerned about the presence of a disability, and have not been diagnosed or had formal accommodations, are encouraged to review the following information.  SSD does not conduct assessments on site, but SSD may be able to refer students to an off campus testing location, at a cost to the student.

General Information- Formal Assessment

While it is the students responsiblity to provide documentation in order to qualify for services, there may be times when students are unaware or were unable to puruse formal assessment in K-12 or at their community college.  If the student gets to Fresno State and is still concerned regarding the presence of a disability, they have a few options.

Seek assistance from their primary care provider for a referral to a psychologist/psychiatrist

  • Pros: direct, may be able to use your insurance
  • Cons: insurance may not cover, time

Seek out psychologist or psychiatrist on their own

  • Pros: direct
  • Cons: high cost when seeking services without insurance and out of pocket

Seek help from SSD to be referred to off campus locations.

Pros: lower overal cost
Cons: length of time 8-10 months total from time of referal to potentail completed exam.

None of these options guarantee that you will receive a diagnosis.  There are some concerns that students might have with concentration, processing, comprehension, etc., that are not necessarily connected with a disability.  Other times, the concerns that students may have might be better addressed through on campus resources.

Resources

**At this time, SSD is not able to perform assessments or provide diagnoses for students. **

Students wishing to seek assessment for diagnosis are encouraged to connect with other practitioners in the area who could complete assessments. This may vary on timeline, price, insurance coverage etc. Students are encouraged to connect with their Primary Care Physician to discuss a potential referral.

LD Assessment Referral Process

If students are unsure if they have a learning disability and would like to discuss this with an Access Specialist, the following process may occur. Students are also able to reach out directly. The only benefit to speaking with an Access Specialist first, is that the office would complete a screener and discussion to help determine the likelihood of any academic difficulties being due to a disability.

  1. Students will meet to review their concerns with an Access Specialist.
    1. The Access Specialist may determine if the student would be eligible for accommodations without going through formalized assessment at that time.
  2. The student will be asked to complete a detailed screening packet and return it to the Access Specialist/SSD.
  3. The student will then meet with the Access Specialist to review the completed screening packet and any recommendations from the Access Specialist, including determination regarding the appropriateness of a referral for further assessment.
  4. If such a referral is made, the student would then be responsible for following-up with the Referral Source including:
    1. All communication
    2. Any and all scheduling
    3. Any and all costs associated with the assessment*
    4. Any follow up with the Referral Source
  5. The student would then be responsible for submitting any completed reports to SSD after testing has been completed.
  6. If disabilities have been identified via the assessment process, another appointment will be made with SSD to complete the process of determining appropriate academic accommodations.
